Plus: Rihanna joins Elvis and The Beatles in the Official Chart history books!
In one of the most exciting chart battles of 2013,
One Direction have been denied their fourth UK Number 1 single by Eminem and Rihanna.
Despite being released on Tuesday,
and having a 48 hour disadvantage on the rest of this week’s new singles, Eminem and Rihanna’s The Monster has romped ahead of Harry, Zayn, Niall, Liam and Louis, who had been leading the race all week with their new single, Story Of My Life.
Taken from Eminem’s forthcoming eighth studio album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (out tomorrow),
The Monster is both the US rapper and Rihanna’s seventh UK Number 1 single.
The last time the pair released a single together was 2010’s Love The Way You Lie, which peaked at Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart. It has gone on to become one of the UK’s biggest selling singles of all-time, with more than 1.15 million copies sold.
Eminem last topped the Official Singles Chart almost seven years ago featuring on Akon’s Smack That,
while Rihanna now joins Elvis Presley and The Beatles in the Official Chart history books as just one of three acts to have scored seven Number 1 singles over seven consecutive years.
Last week’s chart topper, Royals by 16-year-old New Zealand singer Lorde, falls one place to Number 2 today, while Fat Boy Slim’s Eat Sleep Rave Repeat debuts at Number 3. The Calvin Harris remix of the track, which was neck-and-neck with Eminem and One Direction on Friday, is superstar DJ Norman Cook’s first Top 10 hit since 2001’s double A-side Star 69 / Weapon Of Choice.
One Direction finish the week in fourth place, while OneRepublic’s former Number 1, Counting Stars, completes this week’s Top 5.
New Entries
Tinie Tempah narrowly misses out on a Top 5 placing with his latest single, Children Of The Sun FT John Martin (Number 6). The track is taken from the London-based superstar’s hotly anticipated second album, Demonstration (out tomorrow).
The Wanted debut a few places behind Tinie with Show Me Love (America) (Number 8) which is lifted from their new album, Word Of Mouth (also released tomorrow). Foxes, who previously joined forces with Rudimental for their Top 20 hit Right Here earlier this year, scores a Top 20 hit of her own with Youth, which is new at Number 12.
This week’s Official Singles Chart’s new entries are completed by Justin Bieber’s Recovery (28) and new boyband M.A.D. – AKA 16-year-olds Michael Sutthakorn, Aiden Hancock and Dan Lewis – with their debut Top 40 hit, Toy Boy (37).

Arcade Fire knock Katy Perry off Number 1, while Lorde and Union J debut in the Official Albums Chart Top 10.
Arcade Fire will no doubt be celebrating this evening after their new album, Reflektor, has gone straight in at Number 1 on the UK’s Official Albums Chart.
The Canadian indie band’s fourth studio full-length has knocked Katy Perry’s Prism (Number 2) off the chart’s summit after just one week on top, and has outsold it by nearly two copies to one over the last seven days.
James Blunt also slides one place to Number 3 today with Moon Landing, while Lorde is new in at Number 4 with Pure Heroine. The 16-year-old New Zealand singer / songwriter topped the Official Singles Chart last Sunday to score her debut UK hit with Royals.
Arctic Monkey’s former Number 1 album, AM (Number 5), completes this week’s Top 5.
New Entries and High Climbers
In addition to Arcade Fire’s Reflektor (Number 1) and Lorde’s Pure Heroine (4), there are six other new entries on this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 40.
Josh, JJ, Jaymi and George, otherwise known as Union J, are new in at Number 6 with debut album. The former X Factor stars’ self-titled effort features their Top 10 singles Carry You and Beautiful Life.
Meanwhile, 2010 X Factor winner Matt Cardle narrowly misses out on his third consecutive Top 10 album, as his latest effort, Porcelain, enters at Number 11 today. Linkin Park debut one place behind him with their new remix album Recharged (12). The project sees the US metal band’s tracks reworked by the likes of Steve Aoki, Paul Van Dyk and Tom Swoon.
Paul Potts’ The Greatest Hits debuts at 21, spurred on by the cinema release of One Chance (the film based on the former Britain’s Got Talent star’s life which stars James Corden). This week’s new entries are completed by Chas & Dave’s That’s What Happens (25) and Boy George’s This Is What I Do (33).
Fresh from scooping the 2013 Mercury Music Prize on Wednesday night, James Blake sees his second album, Overgrown, rocket from outside the Top 200 to re-enter the Official Albums Chart at Number 23. The London-based singer / songwriter beat off tough competition from the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Jake Bugg and David Bowie to take home this year’s prize.
And finally, following the death of Lou Reed last weekend, the Velvet Underground frontman’s 1973 breakthrough album, Transformer, climbs back into the Official Albums Chart Top 40 at Number 35 today.
