It's actually not that surprising at all. The hype for BTW was extreme. The Amazon pricing also cause an increase in demand for the album for the first week.

I CANNOT at you and other stans bringing in numbers for your share convenience - one minute gaga did NOT sell one million legitimately and then the next it's used against her.

Yeah, you know, maybe Adele will have a 15 million drop from 21 total sales but that won't mean she's flopping when she's still outselling anyone else.

Leaks tend to negatively affect first week sales for pop albums, as well...

It's not so much an excuse as an expectation for the album to actually undershoot the prediction.

Rap albums actually benefit from leaks, cause they tend to gain a lot more hype.
