Roger's Best of 2007 (#30-21 Tunes; #5-3 Albums)
Thanks for all the comments guys
Top 100 Tunes of 2007
21. Justin Timberlake - What Goes Around... Comes Around
22. The White Stripes - Icky Thump
23. The Fratellis - Flathead
24. Feist - 1 2 3 4
25. Timbaland f/ OneRepublic - Apologize
26. Paramore - Misery Business
27. Linkin Park - Shadow Of The Day
28. Plain White Ts - Hey There Delilah
29. Bloc Party - I Still Remember
30. My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words
The #30-21 set is usually one of my favs, just because its all those great tracks which *just* miss the top 20. They're all still epic in their own right. We kick it all off with Justin Timberlake who sees his final appearance on the 2007 year-end with the most mellow and terrific offering off of "FutureSex". Both The White Stripes and The Fratellis released some of the most intensely catchy rock music of the year, with choruses and bridges people couldn't get out of their heads. Breakthrough artist of the year Feist, who is so much more than an iPod advertisement (cant stress that enough), sees her first of two, with one more epic track and album still to be recognized. The likes of Bloc Party and Linkin Park see their final appearances on the year-end capping off a fairly successful 2007, while Timbaland sees his second of three, with one monster smash still on the way. Rounding it off is My Chemical Romance, with the strongest most rocking track off their epic "Welcome to the Black Parade".
The top 20 is on the way. Can you believe it's almost here?

Roger's Best of 2007 (#30-21 Tunes; #5-3 Albums)
Three incredibly solid albums.
Top 40 Albums of 2007
5. Feist - The Reminder
Highlights: My Moon My Man, 1 2 3 4, Sealion, I Feel It All, So Sorry
"The Reminder is a modestly scaled but quietly profound pop gem: sometimes intimate, sometimes exuberant, filled with love songs and hints of mystery" - New York Times
All it took was an iPod advertisement to break Canada's best kept secret into Mainstream superstardom. It was all brilliant to watch unfold; as fresh new Feist fans began to chant "1 2 3 4 tell me that you love me more", the little song that could quietly crept up the iTunes digital chart and Hot 100 and people finally started to take notice. Before all that, many of us already knew the masterpiece that was "The Reminder" - Feist's most provocative and illustrative album to date. Her upbringing as an essential component in Canada's best band Broken Social Scene provided Feist the platform she needed to excel as an artist. Venturing solo, she has now proven herself capable of perfecting multifaceted, and smoothly ecclectic music. Her tender vocals set a mysterious landscape that makes listening to "The Reminder" one of the most pleasant experiences of 2007. And for the record, the hit single off this album should have been "My Moon My Man" - which is single handedly the most sensual, cabaret easy listening track I've heard in ages.
4. Interpol - Our Love to Admire
"The New York quartet retains its flair for dramatic images and ominous guitar lines on its major-label debut, but with producer/ mixer Rich Costey onboard, these signatures uncoil into more complex soundscapes." - Billboard
Highlights: Pace Is The Trick, Rest My Chemistry, The Scale, The Heinrich Maneuver, Pioneer To The Falls
Interpol's tragic flaw is that they've never been able to produce a consistent album from start to finish. About 70% of them seems like absolute magic - wonderfully crafted, perfectly mastered, and art all on its own. However, there always appears to be that remaining couple of tracks which dont fit the mold, that seem too experimental for the landscape already established. "Our Love to Admire" is by far their most confusing effort to date. The emotive tones set in "Turn Off The Bright Lights" and "Antics" are never fully established here, as the NY natives take a turn for the free-flowing chord pop-rock, as they transcend from mopey and dreary indie gods to polished, big chorus rockers. So despite being the least critically favored album of their career, and even their sales have taken a bit of a hit, Interpol have set the stage for something much bigger. This appears to be an album of transition, setting the stage for what could finally be an album worthy of re-establishing the band to "Turn Off The Bright Lights" status. Songs like "Pace Is The Trick" and "Rest My Chemistry", which drown in broad asthetics and pulse pounding production - hint that Paul Banks and co. are on the brink of something brilliant yet again.
3. Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Highlights: Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Me & Mr. Jones, Tears Dry On Their Own, Love Is A Losing Game, Back To Black
"Although Back to Black does see her deserting jazz and wholly embracing contemporary R&B, all the best parts of her musical character emerge intact, and actually, are all the better for the transformation from jazz vocalist to soul siren." - All Music Guide
So here it is, arguably the most important album of 2007. If their was only one album that anyone bought this year, I hope to God this was it. Amy Winehouse moved from being the UK's best kept secret and most cherished gem, to North American crossover success story with the release of the year's most innovative single, "Rehab" - a tale of overdose, denial, and the anger associated. The growth from "Frank" to "Back to Black" is a musical transformation where Winehouse establishes herself as a woman of soul, moreso than jazz. Her vocals are incredibly unique and readily identified, no one touches this chicks pipes. Despite that her songwriting is already A-material, she could make even the most cliche of a story ("Tears Dry On Their Own") into a pop classic just by the way its carried by her voice. So what makes this album so important? With all the tabloid attention and negative publicity coming Winehouse's way, she becomes all the more of a hot commodity. Her album continues to sell by the bucketloads, and she proves that talent always trumps adversity. People will buy her music even if she cant keep a tour going longer than 2 weeks because they know she has a gift. The day I get to see Amy Winehouse perform live, and shes not completely sloshed either, will be the day I see live music transformed before my eyes.
The top 2 albums are still on the way. It was incredibly hard to decide there order.

Roger's Best of 2007 (#20-4 Tunes)
Thanks for all the comments guys. Good stuff.
So due to the alleged Jan. 2 deadline, I've had to speed things up. Today I'll be posting Tunes #20-4, huge update. And then January 1st, I'll post the #2-1 albums, and #3-1 tunes. Enjoy.
Top 100 Tunes of 2007
20. Modest Mouse - Dashboard
We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
Modest Mouse have rivaled the intense brilliance of "Good News For People Who Love Bad News" with their newest album, which was of course led by the thrashing lead single "Dashboard". There's nothing more you can really say about this track that the lead up to the chorus has you tapping your feet and bobbing your head along the way. It's not as somber as "Float On" - but I'd say its a hell of a lot more catchy.
19. Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent
Favorite Worst Nightmare
Here it is! The second of four singles on the year-end for the Sheffield lads who had a dynamite year with their explosive sophmore disc. This was the second single to be lifted off the album, went top 5 in the UK, and chanted rather fittingly "The best you ever had" - because really, Alex Turner and co. are masters of the songwriting craft and illustrate their musical tales into something both whimsical and thoughtful. "Used to get it in your fish nets, now you only get it in your night dress" - brilliant!
18. Kanye West f/ Daft Punk - Stronger
Graduation
This is the first of two for the best rapper in the game (at least out of the ones I've cared to listen too). The Daft Punk sample takes the already sonicating beat of "Stronger" to a new level, certifing it as a genuine club smash that was chanted in all the best clubs across the world. Perfect comeback single, perfect album. More on that later.
17. Alicia Keys - No One
As I Am
So it took a while for it to grow on me, but now I love it more than ever. I would argue that this is Alicia's career-defining single. Its so simple that it almost sounds accapella, which is a true testament to the power of her voice, and the magnitude of her songwriting. "No One" illustrates an undenying passion someone can feel for someone else, and no one conveys those feelings better than Ms. Keys. "I know some people search the world, to find something like what we have" - perfect.
16. Britney Spears - Gimme More
Blackout
Although it's not #1, and not even top 10, this was by far the best comeback single of 2007. Everyone was talking about it, the video was watched by millions on the day of its debut, and not to mention that disastrous VMA performance - and yet the song was STILL a hit. Why you ask? Well simply because of the fact that its a straight up JAM. The pulsing beats, the repetitive nature of the chorus, and Britney sounding extremely hot as always - made this track extremely servicable for both the club and the airwaves. Her most well received single to date, and with just cause. "We can go down like theres no around, we keep on rocking, we keep on rocking" - Good times.

15. Muse - Map Of The Problematique
Black Holes & Revelations
Thank God "Starlight" and "Supermassive Black Hole" became hits on US Alternative radio, as Muse's career defining album BHAR was largely ignored on the Billboard albums chart selling a paltry 350k. Well sorry Americans, but the ability of the European music audience to recognize Muse as one of the greatest rock bands in the world right now highlights your ignorance yet again. "Map" is the highlight off the album, "Starlight" aside obviously, and is pierced with disco synthesizers and pulsating production which is brilliantly infused by Bellamy and co. UK only single, should have seen the time of day in the US.
14. Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good
Back To Black
This is #2 out of 4 for Mrs. Winehouse on the best of 2007, and it was actually the first track of hers I ever heard. I was intrigued by its intense story, unique vocals, and perfectly crafted lyrics. "I told y'all that I was trouble, you know, that I'm no good". Little did we know what Winehouse had in store for us as the year progressed. Her two best tracks are still on the way.
13. The Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby
Yours Truly, Angry Mob
"Ruby, ruby, ruby. Ahhhhhh. Ah do ya do ya do ya?" - honestly, what the hell is catchier than that? The UK mega-band stormed North American shores with a single that was quite possibly even catchier than "I Predict A Riot" - which caused mega hype for their sophmore album which lived up to most people's expectations. Fun, lots of ambition, and little meaning - it's all there and brilliant. Ricky and co. rule yet again.
12. Rihanna f/ Jay Z - Umbrella
Good Girl Gone Bad
This was "the" song of 2007. "You can stand under my umbrella, ella, ella, ay ay, under my umbrella" - its so ludacris its perfect. Rihanna continues her streak of being a part of the most infectious song of the summer, following "Pon De Replay" and "S.O.S.". I'm not sure if its her Caribeean charm, extreme good looks, or sexy bod, but this girl gets to me more and more with every single she puts out. Shes ****ing HOT, enough said. Love this track.
11. Nelly Furtado - Say It Right
Loose
She had the #2 song of the year last year with the club shattering "Promiscuous", and this year she just misses the top 10 with her most ambitious offering to date. The mid-eastern tempo and simple chorus, "Noo you dont mean nothing at all to me, yeah, yeah", make for the perfect blend of an easy listening and head nodding affair. Timbaland hit all the right production notes here, and Nelly Furtado has yet another deserved hit in this one.
Top 10 on the way in seconds!

Here it is folks.
The Top 10 Tunes of 2007
10. Kanye West f/ T-Pain - Good Life
Graduation
I never thought in a million years a song with T-Pain in it would ever be in a year-end top 10 for me, but thankfully, he was limited to mostly "So throw your hands up in the sky" on this track, and even he can't f*ck it up in this case. This has always been my favorite track off Kanye's mind-blowing third disc, "Graduation", a story of all things glorious and how "Having moneys not everything, not having it is". Does money not buy you happiness? All things considered - it can make you pretty damn happy, even if your not truly happy. But at the end of the day, "the good life" is pretty damn good as it is described here, and Kanye by far has the best hip hop single of 2007.
9. Arctic Monkeys - Teddy Picker
Favorite Worst Nightmare
This is now three out of four for the Sheffield lads with what is by far my favorite track off their sophmore disc, the only reason its not higher than the track still to come is because it didn't fare as well on my personal weekly chart. "Teddy Picker" is explosive in every way; whether it be its monumental lead in guitar riff, its catchy and insanely amusing lyrics, and the ****ing grit in Alex Turner's voice as he rips through the god damn track. I go ****ing nuts when I hear this track on the weekend, beer in hand, and friends all around. Sorry about the language, but this song is rock in 3 minutes or less. "Sped up to the point where they provoke you to tell the ****ing punchline before you have told a joke" or "Who'd want to be men of the people? When there's people like you" - hahaha, amazing.
8. Timbaland f/ Keri Hilson & D.O.E. - The Way I Are
Shock Value
Unlike "Give It To Me", which was so obviously a hit just because it combined Timbaland, Furtado, and Timberlake, "The Way I Are" literally came out of nowhere with its sonicating beat and ferocious lyrics by then unheard of Keri Wilson. This song is true fusion - where all the elements collide to light the dance floor on fire and ignite its habitants into a frenzy. "The Way I Are" is the club jam of 2007. Nothing else sounds better in that atmosphere than the opening 20 seconds.
7. Interpol - The Heinrich Maneuver
Our Love To Admire
Was this Interpol's beginning of "selling out"? It was by far their hugest hit to date, the most polished and produced track of their careers, and everything just sounded far too mainstream. But really, WHO THE f*ck CARES. Indie snobs will be indie snobs, and only a lunatic would deny that "Heinrich" is the most engaging single of the NY natives catalogue thus far. "How are things on the West coast?" - a bi-coastal tale of love, lust, and despair, Paul Banks and co. serviced the most accessible Interpol single to the masses they could, and the result was a perfectly great rock track liked by most.
6. Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry On Their Own
Back To Black
Here she is again, with her third of four on the best of 2007 countdown. "Tears" samples that classic track we all know and love, "there aint no mountain high enough, aint no valley low enough", and was supposed to be the second North American single but did very little to ignite "Rehab"-like attention with listeners. However, it did service as a perfect transition in Amy's tabloid career as it was the last glimpse of happiness to be associated with the life of Mrs. Winehouse. This song embodies confidence, independence, and joy following a period of despair. But future singles in "Love Is A Losing Game" would show that Amy is indeed a vulnerable woman - who channels all of these intense emotions into her music, which makes it incredibly endearing. Her best is still to come.
5. Feist - My Moon My Man
The Reminder
Although most people associate her with "1 2 3 4" - I've always though that this was the most definitive moment off the brilliant "The Reminder". A simple beat starts it off, which eventually leads into the most vulnerable and sensual chorus you could ever hear, "take it slow, take it easy on me". Feist, much like Emily Haines, has this very awkward and strange sex appeal; its not about looks. It's about sounding good, and making music your own through impressive songwriting and keeping things simplistic. You want to run a train on the lovely Leslie Feist after hearing this one.
4. Amy Winehouse - Rehab
Back To Black
She caps off a calendar year in 2007, with three songs in the top 20 year-end, and her album sat at #3, and what better way to finish it off but to recognize the song that made her a star, "Rehab". "They try to make me go to rehab, I say no no no" - a song that should have never been mainstream was made popular just because the listening public were willing to accept and appreciate something different. Substance abuse, any sort of abuse, and being up front about it is not something usually so unanimously praised and gleared upon in this industry; and for Winehouse to excel due to the fact that she was honest and letting people into her life through her music was the most effective strategy she could have ever utilized. People empathized with her, and they still do. That's why "Back To Black" is still selling, thats why she got all those Grammy nominations, and that's why "Rehab", the most compelling infusion of RnB, soul, and motown, is the #4 song of 2007.
The top 3 will come New Years day, along with the top 2 albums. Have a good one you guys. Drink responsibly, have a designated driver. Take care.
