I started my game again today (we bought the official handbook too) and I already found a shiny Scatterbug, now I have a shiny Vivillon on my team. I'm going to try a rotation team of 18 Pokemon, with Exp Share hopefully it will be easier than I think.
I'm just about to enter Lumiose City for the first time and my team is Frogadier (Lv 16), Vivillon (Lv 14, shiny) and Combusken (Lv 17).
He used Blaziken and Yveltal though, I had no chance with my team
I don't use legendaries and Uber pokémon in my competative team.

I will say, I was overly excited for the mega-evolutions before the games were actually released moreso I am now. I find myself not using it as much as I thought but I literally got Scizor's mega stone tonight so that will be changing, lol. Also piggy-backing off of what Kitt said, they're more like battle enhancements; you neither have to use them if you don't want nor were they forced upon you i.e. finding the stones for their respective evolutions (excluding the story-arc where mega-evolution was introduced and you were given Lucario with its mega stone ).
You should definitely buy the game(s), though, Kart because the mega-evolutions do not deter from normal gameplay.

Yeah, it's a huge number but I want the challenge. These games were quite easy with Exp Share and I won't focus on proper grinding for all the gyms, but I'm determined to keep all my pokemon at pretty similar levels. Hopefully it goes smoothly.
