This is a common misconception(and, again, more generalizing). Quality is in the eye of the beholder, as you pointed out, this much I agree with, but there's more people out there who will tell you that "Crank That" is the hottest **** around than there are people who will tell you that Arcade Fire and Justice are the ****ing bomb, yo!
And remember, you are making assumptions based off a couple of year-end lists posted by people who review music for a living, aka, you know, critics. These lists are done by critics who do not represent the entire music listening world, only a select part of it. In case you haven't noticed, the mainstream side of music is still king among music listeners. Hell, look at our own year-end forum for proof of that.

Oh plz Ryan. I didn't say there was anything wrong with the list. Just bring me a list by critics that contains strictly mainstream artists. It's not gonna happen. Half of those artists are on there just because they've done previously successful music (IE Bruce Springsteen & Paul McCartney), but is the general public listening to that now? Not really.
