I think Hold It Against Me STILL is under 2.76 million, thus Femme Fatale was a totally fine opening.

Album sales in general were higher during FF. So it was a bigger flop.

Depends on the artist, singles and the previous era.

Why Katy was disappointing: TD was an insanely huge era and Roar was a huge smash.

Why Britney/Beyonce wasn't as disappointing: Their lead singles were not very huge, especially RTW. You could also say they were not in their prime.

270k+ is good for Miley especially since We Can't Stop only opened with 214k even after all the "hype" as you guys like to call it and the 3 year break.

Can't Be Tamed opened with just over 100k, isn't gold in the US and the WW receipts are unknown. Meanwhile Bangerz just passed Can't Be Tamed's US sales in a matter of 2/3 weeks and I'm pretty sure is gold WW already

I don't understand why you guys expect an artist do a certain number or otherwise they're a flop. If you're really expecting them to do that certain number then go buy the album

Why would anyone expect veterans like Beyonce or Britney to sell incredibly well? Yes, their names are huge but seeing as they've been having careers for 12+ years, they are BOUND to lose steam and popularity.

Meanwhile, you have established yet newer artists with huge hits and promo that can't even crack 300k. That is much more underwhelming.

And just because someone opens big one year, and then declines another, doesn't make it a flop. There are loads of factors behind a decline. If anyone expects Taylor Swift to keep doing 1 million every release, it's not happening.

Everyone has a peak. It just so happens some of these 'superstars' have embarrassingly low peaks for all their hits and such. It really puts into perspective whose fanbase is really there for the long haul and not just certain smashes.
