Samsung extends lead over Apple

Samsung extends smartphone lead over Apple
Washington (AFP) - Samsung extended its lead over Apple in the global smartphone market in the third quarter as Chinese manufacturers also made inroads, a survey showed Tuesday.
The worldwide smartphone market saw record sales in the quarter, with growth of 38.8 percent from a year ago and 258.4 million units sold, the IDC survey said.
The South Korean electronics giant Samsung widened its lead, shipping 81.2 million smartphones, boosting its market share by nearly half a percentage point to 31.4 percent.
Apple sold 33.8 million iPhones in the quarter, but its growth was slower than the overall market, so its share slipped to 13.1 percent from 14.4 percent a year ago.
China's Huawei moved into third place, propelled by 76 percent year-over-year growth. It sold 12.5 million smartphones, grabbing a market share of 4.8 percent, just ahead of the 4.7 percent for fellow Chinese firm Lenovo.
South Korea's LG slipped from third to fifth place, with a 4.6 percent share, despite sales growth of 71 percent.
"Beyond Samsung and Apple at the top of the rankings is a tight race of vendors trying to break out from the pack," said IDC analyst Ramon Llamas.
"Chinese vendors Huawei and Lenovo moved past LG, and not far behind are two more Chinese companies, Coolpad and ZTE."
The survey did not break down the market share for Android, the dominant operating platform from Google.
But a separate report from ABI Research said Android's global market share reached a record 80.6 percent. ABI estimated Apple's share at 14 percent, with Windows Phone at four percent and BlackBerry 1.5 percent.
"The race for the third ecosystem is clearly favoring Windows Phone... but there remains little opportunity for new market entrants to make a significant impact on Android’s dominance," said ABI analyst Michael Morgan.
ABI's estimate showed 244 million smartphones shipped, with Samsung's share at 35 percent and Apple's 14 percent.
ABI said it expects Apple to sell a record 53 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, but that this would boost its market share only to 18.7 percent.
IDC's Llamas said the smartphone market is still growing at a solid pace and expects annual sales of one billion units in 2014.
The overall mobile phone market grew 5.7 percent from a year ago to 467.9 million units, with Samsung on top with a 24.7 percent market share, IDC said.

If it's the same phone, why do people keep buying them? Not everyone likes the same phone, so they change things to fit what the customers want or need.
You shouldn't try it with this, since I'm sure Apple will soon unveil it's next iPhone along 5/6 inch versions.

I only like Apple when it comes to my music, everything else is just annoying.
And everyone here is over Apple anyway.

If Apple is superior, then why is Samsung winning? Wake up and smell the .
The Galaxy series trumps the iPhone, honestly. When I get a new smartphone, it will probably be the #1 contender.

Let's have a look though.
Current amount of Samsung Smartphones: 40 (not including the Note series or normal mobile phones).
Current amount of Apple Smartphones: 3
Samsung's average profit per phone last quarter: 2+ million
Apple's average profit per phone last quarter: 11+ million (before the 5C or 5S)
So basically the joke is on Samsung because they are literally producing 40 phones right now, and only get two million back on average per phone? Wheras Apple got back 11 million from the 4, 4S and 5?
Of course the biggest seller is the GS4, but the cost to make all 40 of the other phones still remains, so the average 2 million per phone model isn't actually anything to boast about.
If Samsung stopped spending millions on no1curr phones that I would actually congratulate them.
But now we have the fourth quarter sales which will show that Apple get more back per investment on each phone, by over five times that of Samsung.

Wait... so having a wide range of specialized products tailored to different markets and specific demographics is a bad thing now apparently.
Who knew.
Samsung's overall revenue is still higher than Apple's if I'm not mistaken, and they have broader appeal thanks to the many different models, which means they also most likely have a more stable and more loyal regular clientele.
So your point is kind of... moot.

No it's not a bad thing but,
What I'm saying is if you actually looked at the products, most of them are the same. They could easily de-clutter half the stock the have because most of them are clones of each other.
It's still higher, but the costs to design and bring each phone to fruition (advertising and manufacturing, shipping etc) and keeping it available would easily be a million plus per phone (when you average it out) and yet they are only making 2 million back per product.
Apple are able to put out a product with cheap advertising (most of their advertising is by word of mouth) and are able to spend the same amount of money per phone and get five times that back in one quarter (not to mention that the iPhone sales per model are a lot higher than Samsungs best seller).
In the end, Apple got over 10 million back per phone (two of which had already been more than profitable with the 4 & 4S) and that was in Apple's quietest quarter (before the 5S and 5C).
Samsung get 2 million back per phone. That's not much of an achievement.

Overall revenue doesn't mean anything if you have higher costs keeping profits down...
Samsung is a prolific and super-successful smartphone producer (among other things, it's a massive electronics conglomerate), but Apple is the more successful business. I don't think it'll be this way forever, but Apple has been making insane amounts of money for as long as I can remember.

Samsung on top, where it belongs. Apple is an epic fail of a company, their arrogance and delusion takes them nowhere.

The thing is, that EVEN IF THEY'RE THE SAME (which they are not), people are STILL buying them. I fail to see how that really has anything to do with the topic. Having 1051 styles of "the same" phone is not going to force you or anyone to buy the product. In Samsung's case, it's working for them. They have phones available for different types of customers, because not everyone has the same needs.
