QUEENS (PIX11) - Jennifer Altman has almost 3,000 stitches caused by the man she loved. Jennifer is the estranged wife of 23-year-old Dartanyan Kingsberry. Last Friday while Jennifer was on her way to work, Kingsberry allegedly jumped her in Queens.
This horror story started as a love story in 2011. Kingsberry was a tenant in the house owned by Jennifer’s mother. She began seeing Kingsberry and the two maintained a relationship even though Jennifer knew her love had done time for armed robbery.
“I felt like I love him so much that nothing could ever break us apart,’ she told me Wednesday when we sat down one-on-one. “What kept me there was I can be myself with him. He didn’t judge me for anything that I did wrong. I never judged him for anything that he did wrong.”
After a year and a half together, Kingsberry proposed.
“We went down to City Hall. We got our little outfits and we got married and then…it was hell from there.”
Jennifer says the love faded quickly. Kingsberry became possessive and degrading. Then violent, she alleges.
“A couple of weeks after we got married it got really bad and he beat me,” she confided.
HOWARD: Do you remember why?
“He was drunk and acted out because we got in a little argument and so I left!”
Jennifer says Kingsberry showed no remorse for the alleged beating. They agreed to divorce. That was about a month ago. Last Friday she says the violent streak turned into attempted murder.
Jennifer told me it happened as she was paying to get on the train near Kingsberry’s mother’s house. Suddenly he appeared and snatched her cell phone. She ran after him, toward her mother’s building. She wanted her phone back.
Here’s what she says happened next. Unvarnished. Her words…some through tears.
“When he got me to the front of his mother’s building, he just started slashing me…with a box cutter…”
“I just remember him saying “that I wasn’t going to be pretty for anyone else. If he can’t have me no one can have me. I just remember trying to protect my neck because he was trying to slash my neck and I didn’t want to go out like that.
I just remember bending down on the floor and letting him slash the rest of my body. I didn’t care what he did to me I just didn’t want him to kill me.”
Dartanyan’s mother called police. He took off.
“I can’t sleep, I can’t eat, I can’t do anything. I can’t look at myself in the mirror.”
