Discussion: So What Is A FLOP OPENING?

Two of the most anticipated pop releases this fall have dropped: Miley Cyrus' Bangerz and Katy Perry's PRISM, with Lady Gaga's ARTPOP on the way next.

Bangerz, with two huge smashes, relentless promo and exposure, opened with 270k.

PRISM, with a massive selling #1 hit and successful promo singles, opened with 287k.

Recent releases by Britney Spears (Femme Fatale with 276k), Nicki Minaj (Pink Friday Roman Reloaded with 253k) and Beyonce (4 with 310k) were all deemed FLOP OPENINGS, even though they were released in the notoriously slow spring and summer seasons.

Now that there is a solid proof that the major pop girls are opening in the same range in this day and age (save Gaga's much debated 1 million Born This Way opener + if you consider Taylor Swift a pop girl), what do you consider to be a FLOP OPENING WEEK?

Also, Prism was not released during the spring/summer season like the other albums you mentioned.

So why isn't Unapologetic, which sold incredibly low as well, not mentioned????????

I don't know if there is a set number since it depends on the promo and star, but debutting with 192k after one or two record-breaking #1s is pretty floppish.

Because Rihanna had never been a huge opener.

Okay, so for conversational sake and to understand your view more (and I am not shading her, I love her, look above my avi) - do you consider Unapologetic's opening numbers (238k) following the success of Diamonds and the promo run (Victoria's Secret, 777 Tour, SNL, etc) a flop opening?

JT's Part 2 opened with bigger numbers than Prism without a single getting played on the radio/top20 on iTunes

Katy, Nicki, and Miley's numbers are terrible considering they are newer artists and both had massive hits preceding the album while Bey and Britney are veteran artists who had under performing singles yet their albums managed to do more/similar numbers.

The OP is obviously referring to the major pop girls, and JT's situation is quite different from Katy's.

It depends on each star and the circumstances. 4 had like a 3 week leak and no hit singles so, even tho Beyonce is the Queen and KIng of the universe, 310k was a good estimate for the circumstances. You can call it a flop if you want, but whatever.

I guess Katy is a smaller star; She had huge promo, a huge single and because of that people will think it had flop opening numbers because usually with all those things you would expect huge numbers, nothing in the 200k sector or less.
