Gaga is becoming the underdog. She'll be criticised and dismissed for being tired and pretentious, whilst her peers will be praised for their light hearted play and hit reliability. However, people like the underdog. It's endearing and people start to root for you, which then will lead to a flip when they're bored of safer popstars again.
The question is timing. For some reporters (like this one), BTW's backlash and Applause were enough to position her as the underdog. For others, they're going to need her to fall further from that pedestal (i.e. after ARTPOP underperforms and is outshone by Katy etc).
Make no mistake though, Gaga isn't going anywhere. And if she choses to play the fame game again and properly fight for mainstream success, then this is only the beginning.

Absolutely. It's human nature to be seen not to like what everyone else likes. Gaga was so popular in her ascendancy to the top because she was subverting what everyone else was doing.
Now what everyone else is doing is subverting her, they're getting behind the popular and upcoming new thing.
Give it a couple more years, and Gaga will have another ascendancy in the mainstream. Her fanbase is still extraordinary and will easily keep her a major player in the game, but it'll be soon before long that it'll be proclaimed that "SHE'S BACK!!".
Many fall by the way-side, of course. However, these types usually don't have the talent or perseverance to keep themselves around.
