Depends on which chaining you mean. On grass or by fishing. You have to consecutively faint or capture the same pokemon to the max of 40 which will make the Shiny rate drop down to 1/40. You can't flee or let it flee or you have to start over again. And the pokemon you chain has to be the same from the first to the 40th.
