Dogs seem to have a good understanding of what's going on in their house and with their owners...just cuz cats can jump and are dependent doesn't mean they're smart. Dogs understand emotions as well. Dogs>>>>>
I’ve owned multiple cats and multiple dogs and they’re both VERY intelligent in their own ways, but I have to say cats here. and I’m actually basing it off of my moms previous experience with her cat. when she was a teen her dad didn’t want the cat she had to be there anymore so he apparently dropped ha ass off 10 miles away somewhere(he really doesn’t like cats) and said she ran away. come two weeks later that **** was standing at the front door looking like it went through hell and back to find them I mean 10 MILES! I couldn’t even do that ****
Dogs are like the kids who spend hours upon hours studying for a test weeks straight and get an A-.
Cats are like the slackers who don't study at all and play with their iPhones in class and get a B+.

My aunts cat did the same, they drove it to a farm and it came back.
There's stories of cats travelling really far, like one family lost their cat when they were on vacation in Turkey (from Germany), and the cat showed up at their house 2 years later, it was really skinny, and pregnant, but alive. Made it all the way from Turkey.

not cats being able to move from country to country off of pure memory, and i can’t even make it to downtown without a GPS
I always thought Cats were smarter. You can leave them at home for months and they'd survive. Dogs would destroy the house and probably die within a day or two. They just seem more sophisticated and intelligent, just by looking at them. So I'm surprised at the poll results and the comments. That being said, I love dogs way more. Cats are generally more selfish, to themselves and unfriendly imo.
You can't compare their intelligence in a scientific way.
I would say that dogs have the capacity to be more intelligent (and occasionally, you encounter really intelligent dogs) but most are bred into stupidity. Most dogs I know are just... phenomenally dumb. Especially purebred small dogs. I think dogs have a higher emotional intelligence than cats though.
Cats are generally very smart, crafty and extremely quick learners. Cats don't repeat the same mistake twice. You give an ordinary cat a bad experience just once with a carrier, water, ear cleaner, pills, food and they will be put off for life - this is why people have so much behavioral trouble with them. Cats just can't afford to depend on you, so they figure out their own **** (hence "curiosity kills the cat"). Dogs depend on you entirely. The average cat is quite intelligent - it needs to be in order to survive, they do not comprehend that you're responsible for their well being, and have 0 faith in your ability to help them out. Since they're more "disposable" than dogs, natural selection seems to have dealt them a good card. You don't see many stray dogs. You see plenty of stray cats. The intelligent ones survive and need to be good problem solvers to manage to survive on their own.
Dogs tend to be favoured as more intelligent because they're more sociable with humans. They've also been domesticated a few thousand years more than cats have, so that's something to keep in mind. We think we are the smartest creature on earth and we base it on our ability to use language and work together, and although dogs can't speak, we can make them do what we want, so we think they must be intelligent. Dogs have an intrinsic need to function as part of a group, and cats could care less and find it safer to be solo. Dogs can be trained very easily, and so can cats... IF you have something worthwhile to teach them. Many cats (check youtube) can be trained to use the toilet - flushing and all - it's a convenient setup for the cats, so they'll do it. They're not going to just do it for treats though, their need to be approved by you and the treats you give them are simply not adequate bribery for a cat. They're not going to expend energy for a tasty treat or your approval, they'd prefer to go sleep or entertain themselves in another way.
Some people say that dogs must be more intelligent then cats due to the size of their brains, but then this debunks us as the smartest creatures on earth (along with other problems with this argument).
tl;dr: Dogs are more obedient by design - so because we can train them to do things, we think they must be more intelligent. The average dog is pretty handicapped, but the species probably has the potential to be more intelligent than cats. The average cat is quite intelligent, but not obedient to humans.
They are so smart, you'd think they're your brother/sister. They know when you're angry. They'd come to you to apologize. They know how to greet. They know which car is their owner's car. They are like human.
Cats are not even smart... Had a cat before. They don't know how to do anything! They don't even care about the existence of their owner.

I don't think this bodes well for the argument in favor of dogs.
