In terms of popularity prolly yeah but in content is way superior. I didn't like in Friends that all the characters acted like spoiled little brats when they were pretty average people.
All the complaints about TBBT I see here are the same things Friends gets criticized for as well
It definitely is this generations Friends. It doesn't just dominate with its new episodes, but their syndicated re-runs get extremely good ratings for TBS as well.
Not at all. Friends is such a great show because all the characters are irreplaceable. You can't get rid of one of them without screwing up the friendship dynamic that made the show so great.
In The Big Bang Theory, all you need is Sheldon and people that aren't as smart as him. That's what makes the show entertaining. A few of the characters could be killed off and the show wouldn't be affect. Sheldon and Penny bring the most to the show.

The dynamic of Friends is what makes the show and can't be compared to the dynamic of TBBT. Plus, TBBT has more "fillers" in a season. But it wins in its scientific jokes.
In terms of ratings it absolutely is. The Big Bang Theory is HUGE WORLDWIDE. It def. is this generations FRIENDS, without downgrading Friends. It's my fav. show ever lol.
At the beginning of How I Met Your Mother I used to think it was the new Friends, but when you look at the ratings it never got even close to friends....the average isn't even 10 million/episode anymore, while Friends was at it's high.
