Are The Wanted the "John Carter" to 1D's "Hunger Games"?
Do you think that The Wanted are the "John Carter" of the American music industry to One Direction's "The Hunger Games"? Remember, Disney had very high hopes for "John Carter" and tried to push it with a hard promotional campaign including a Super Bowl ad. However, it completely bombed at the box office, making only $30 million out of a $250 million budget.
Like "John Carter" had with Disney, The Wanted, whose song "Glad You Came" was rising fast, had very powerful backing from Scooter Braun, Justin Bieber's manager. The Wanted got their biggest exposure from another very powerful cash cow, "Glee." Unfortunately, their album bombed hard and they never had another hit.
Both Disney and Scooter Braun seemed very confident in their act's success. Little did they know, a rival would pop up and completely destroy them in every way possible.
Two weeks after "John Carter" hit theaters, Lionsgate released "The Hunger Games." While the film had high expectations, nobody expected it to have an opening week of over $150 million. That's exactly what it did, bringing in numbers reminiscent of the summer movie season. It would go on to top the box office for four weeks. This proved to be bad news for Disney, not only because it annihilated "John Carter," but because it was aiming fast at their other big franchise, the Marvel Comics movies. This is especially shocking considering that Lionsgate is nowhere near the billion-dollar corporation that Disney is.
After "Glad You Came" became a surprise hit, Simon Cowell brought in his own boy band, One Direction. Like "The Hunger Games," 1D completely blew past industry expectations, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 and breaking the Today Show attendance record. And they didn't have nearly as much promo as The Wanted did. Like with Disney, Scooter Braun quickly realized that not only had The Wanted been destroyed, but that Justin Bieber wasn't safe from 1D-mania either.
