It should be noted that the women of the 70s paved the way for the women of the 80s, esp when it comes to Janet and Madonna, Whitney, not as much. That said, the women of the 80s took what the 70s chicks did to stratospheric levels and were more well-rounded in terms of artistic output.

Pop was attached to the word popular back in Tin Pan Alley days. After MJ and Madonna, the genre pop was born as we know it nowadays, and it is more related to "pop out" (suddenly emerge) rather than being just "popular".
