It came across that way back in 1998/9 which is why they titled it ...Baby one more time and I remember brief controversy because people were stupid enough to actually think someone would have a teenage singer sing about being hit violently by a boyfriend. The song clearly isn't about a literal hit. But, to a woman that spent years in a bad and violent relationship the lyrics of the song can be colored unpleasantly just by virtue of previous experiences even if they're not related. I can understand the perspective there and why they passed on the song.
