Even though I'm a native speaker, I'm still confused about whether to put a punctuation outside or inside a quote. For example:


Do you put your punctuation outside or inside the quotation? Or is it one of those British vs American English things? Cause I've seen both.

If you're American, just put all commas and periods inside the quotation.

Why do you need the comma there? If the quote is in the end of a sentence you would put a period inside the quotation. If the quote is in the middle of a sentence you would just get rid of the comma put no punctuation.

The American rule is inside, but the British put it outside. Obviously you should put exclamation points and question marks outside if they aren't part of the phrase inside the quotation marks. Based on US rules, here are some examples of correct punctuation rules:

The only time you'd put punctuation outside of quotation marks is if there is a question outside of the quote.
