RIHANNA came…but she failed to conquer with the South African leg of her Diamonds World Tour concert at FNB Stadium on Sunday night.
And if the tsunami of twitter rants were anything to go by - the fans that packed the stadium felt seriously short-changed. But they had every right to be…
Let's just say there was nothing shining about her performance; barring the time when she belted out her big hits - Only Girl (In The World), We Found Love and, going uber raunchy with her moves to Rude Boy.
With most of the female fans mimicking their idol's funky-sexy fashion sensibilities with shorts that barely covered much and T-shirts, Riri dived right in - albeit about 30 minutes later (not unexpected though).
She came onto stage dressed in a blinged-out cap, tank top covered by a short jacket and black pants, which flattered her sexy, toned body and enhanced every hip-thrust when she unleashed her trademark x-rated gyration.
Given that she had several outfits designed by Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci and Christian Dior's Raf Simons for her several acts and the encore, it was immensely disappointing to find she didn't do any costume changes - despite taking about three brief breaks for touch-ups and a shoe change.
Aside from her predominantly Carribean-inspired songs, where she proved her mettle in the reggae genre, she got the crowd going (especially the diehards) with songs like You Da One, Man Down, Umbrella, All of the Lights, Love the Way You Lie (Part II) and S&M, there were times when the sound failed to carry through in the stadium and certain shortened versions proved to be an anti-climax.
The extension of her interaction with the audience was her giving a shoutout to Jo'burg saying, “What the f**k is up?” Thereafter, after every two or three songs, she would scream, “Johannesburg!” And this seemed to send fans into squeals of excitement.
When I first saw Riri perform, she was still a fresh-faced, squeaky-clean newbie accompanying Jay Z in SA when she was a Pon De Replay singing sensation - this was several years back.
With a complete personality and image overhaul, she has become this sex-symbol with dirty dancing moves and lyrics that would make some people blush.
She may be a good girl gone bad these days; but I certainly didn't want to Stay especially after her tweaked version of Diamonds.
All I have to say is, “What the f**k is up with that performance, Riri?”
That she didn't belt out Cheers (Drink to That) and California King Bed was unforgivable.
When we have had legends like Coldplay, Linkin' Park and Bon Jovi astound fans on that very stage, leaving them with indelible memories - there is no excusing Riri's emotionally-barren and unapologetically awful concert.
Talented, she is. An engaging performer, she is so not!

Rihanna made history on Sunday night when she became the youngest performer ever to sell out the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. But South African fans will remember the show for another reason: Concertgoers were in an uproar post-show, complaining that Rihanna’s low energy and alleged lip-synching did not justify her high ticket prices.
“Ri-Ri Rip-Off!” blared the front page of The Star Johannesburg newspaper on Monday morning. Calling her performance “below-par,” the article cited “allegations that Rihanna was miming some of her songs, did not perform a single costume change, had not performed some of her biggest hits and lacked vitality.”
“It was obvious,” staff photographer Sharon Seretlo told the paper of RiRi’s supposed lip-synching. “You when when someone is lip-synching. I was in the Golden Circle [close to the stage]. I could see it.”

“I’m a die-hard Rihanna fan, but I was disappointed,” Seretlo continued. “It was like she didn’t give the energy we wanted from her.”
Fan Nicole Contini added, “… I don’t feel the ticket prices were fair considering the level of performance.”
Prices, though below, $100, were considered high for the local market.
Check out some of the other disappointed reactions from fans on Twitter:
@irCadillac I absolutely love Rihanna’s music, but she lip synced a lot, the crowd sang most of the songs & overall performance (

Rihanna’s Diamonds World Tour has been plagued with similar complaints of lip-synching, as well as delays and accusations of drug and alcohol abuse. The tour wraps up on November 15 in New Orleans.
