Crystal Kay is an R&B singer currently signed to the label Delicious Deli Records!, sub-label of Universal Music Japan. Born and raised in Yokohama, Kaganawa Prefecture to an African-American father and a Korean mother, Kay started her music career at the age of six. At 12 she got a record deal, and then teamed up with Kanno Yoko to produce her debut single "Eternal Memories", under EPIC Records sub-label of Sony Music Entertainment. Like a number of Japanese artists Kay can speak both English and Japanese, the former making a regular appearance in her songs, exhibiting a distinctly western influenced R&B sound. She is currently pursuing a career in the US market. Listen to her new US buzz single, Dum Ditty Dumb below.
I love Kuri so much, but this song is just not the business.
Her vocals and the production are on poinT, but this song will only hurt her. Not only do the "asian" sound and Japanese parts in the intro and chorus doom the song to never be played on US radio, they also serve as a reminder that she turned into a major flop there.
Case in point: American Idol Queen -- Jasmine Trias. This song is a massive bop, but the "asian" sound doomed it to never take off on radio. Asians already have it hard enough in the music industry, so I don't know why anyone would want to drive that point home even more.
I hope this is just a cute song (temporarily) on her website for the fans who already know and love her. The Japanese reminds us of her past/heritage and the production/English serves as a preview of what's to come. If Kuri/Universal tries to make this song happen, it will most likely doom her to irrelevance forever, and that would devastate me.
