I don't think he's using that word to hate on gay people though. When straight guys say that word to each other they usually mean it like "You're a sissy", "You're such a loser" or "You're a coward". I know the history of the word and obviously it should get censored from the radio, etc, but it's only homophobic if it's used in such a context imo.
Most swear words meant something else originally but they're hardly ever used in that context anymore. For example, "bastard" means someone born outside of marriage, but it's hardly ever used to mean that anymore, it's become mainly a generic insult, and I wouldn't say if someone used the word that they hate people born out of wedlock.
