The critics trashed her in Teenage Dream era because of songs like "Peacock" and because of her horrible try-hard "serious artist" attempts with Circle the Drain and What Am I Living For?.
There is little of that on Prism, every song sounds at least listenable and more polished lyrically, and the innuendos are a lot less crass than "Peacock".
Also critics were clearly not in sync with audiences around the world when it came to her last album and after someone experience breakout commercial success with a panned album they tend to be kinder to the next album (see Oasis with What's the Story? and Be Here Now).
