Well someone Pokemon need love to evolve like Riolu which means you always need to battle with it, have it as first Poekmon in the party and don't let it die. Pokemon AMIE just gives you a bonus in battles like curing burn or something and it helps you to evolve Sylveon apparently

Amie affection and regular happiness are different
Amie helps eevee evolve into Sylveon, and regular happiness helps Riolu into Lucario
Regular happiness is what you get for giving your pokemon minerals, leveling them up, giving them massages, giving them soothe bell to hold, catching them with a luxury ball etc
