J Lo was a backup dancer for New Kids On The Block in 1991, then "In living Color" then a backup dancer for Janet in 1993. She didn't become famous until 1997 when she filmed "Selena", dated Puffy & slept with Tommy Mottola.
By then Mariah had 11 #1s, about to add two more that same year, and had sold over 60 million albums, maybe more.
So no, she was not famous before Mariah

This. Pretty sure Mariah was famous before Jennifer Lopez regardless of when either of them became active in the business.

You dont become famous just by working for famous people. As Mariah wasn't famous yet in 1988 and she was just a back up vocalist for Brenda K. Starr same thing applies for J Lo as well. Mariah became famous way before Jennifer, this is not even debatable. You should make another thread as to who from those 2 is more famous and more relevant right now. That would be debatable. Not this.

As if Mariah didn't sleep with Tommy Mottola the year she became famous too
And Mariah may have been "famous" first but back in the 90s, she was extremely very low key, and her fame was on a Pink/Carrie Underwood under the radar scale, not the level of fame she has now. JLO became huge fame wise in 99. Mariah didn't experience that kind of level of fame until 2001. So in that sense, yes, JLO did become "famous" first.

I do remember the Destiny's Child breakup, I just wasn't allowed to watch MTV back then. I was only allowed to watch MTV under my sister's supervision, so I didn't catch everything.
And my sister was the biggest Mariah Carey fan in the world, so I know a bit more about Mariah Carey than the average person. She was not "low key" considering I still own the Dutch and German music magazines my sister bought in the 90's and Mariah is in almost every single one of them
