Perhaps the two of you don't understand what is meant by "voice of a generation." If having hit after hit is what makes one the voice of a generation, then many others would have qualified for the title...but in reality, they don't.
Also, if you listen to songs such as "Beautiful" and "Can't Hold Us Down", then you'll hear that she actually does have an opinion concerning certain matters.
