these janet v kylie threads always gets messy

I think that's the point. Both are popular in different areas. For example, you're more likely to hear about Kylie in Australia and the UK than Janet. And you're more likely to hear about Janet in the US and Asia than Kylie.

I'm from the US, and personally I've never heard either of their names. But I have a vivid memory of hearing CGYOHMH than any Janet song.

Both Janet and Kylie practically flopped in the markets the other is strong in, which is why there's a strong difference of opinion.

Okay, but if you compare Janets "average" market (Europe) to Kylies (America) you will see that Janet has done much better than Kylie. Also you can simply just look at their total record sales to see who has had a more global career. Janet has been succesful in Australia too, hell I would argue that she was even bigger here than Kylie in the 90's, "The Best Things In Life Are Free" and "Together Again" are classics here.

Of course sis has Kylie Minogue sold 10 million worldwide with her dark & introspective Impossible Princess, like the Velvet Rope??

Was the global kylie minogue cited as an influence on a range of performers form different genres/races with examples like Britney Spears, J.LO, Beyonce, Robyn, Macy Gray, Joss Stone, Xtina, The Spice Girls etc...???

In addition, you not knowing/hearing about an artist or their work does not equate to them being "less iconic" than someone else or not an icon at all. How frequently is Judy Garland played on radio? Or Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Mahalia Jackson, Rosetta Tharpe, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Chuck Berry, Bessie Smith and Jackie Wilson? How frequently are they talked about today in the public eye? Does that mean they're not icons and legends?

Duh. Janet's more successful overall than Kylie. I'm not saying that Janet was never successful in the areas where Kylie is iconic in. I'm just saying that she's more of a figure in those areas than Janet. Just like Kylie, at one point, was successful in the US. Janet is clearly more successful there overall than Kylie.
