Britney has longevity in her ongoing MUSIC career which at the end of the day is what the Grammys are about. More current longevity than all of the other nominees that year to be exact.

Retrospectively looking back with the knowledge that we know now we can all come to the conclusion that Britney should have won that award with her still having a prosperous musical career and an upcoming #1 album which pretty much means that, yes, she was indeed the Best New Artist of that year.
