I'm thinking of buying a DS just for this game. Which one should I buy? Cheapest etc? And do you guys think getting the larger one is worth it?

If it's just for this game and you don't plan on using it at all after playing XY, you might as well go with a 2DS or just the original 3DS.

But if you want to keep it, maybe play some of the 3DS' great catalog of games, or even just future Pokémon releases, I'd invest in a 3DS XL. It's really not all that expensive and it's a fantastic handheld.
