Of course I'm an American, but we don't use that term, we call ourselves Latin American, which is different. In here, we don't call you Americans, when we refer to US people, we call them "estadounidenses" or "gringos".
In here, we don't use that model, we've been taught America is a continent. You commonly refer to your country as America.

The United States of America is the
only country in the world with America in its name. So yes, it is referred to in short by many as America and its people as Americans. It's much easier to say than United Statiens (

) -- if your country refers to US citizens as something other than Americans, fantastic. But, it doesn't make the citizens of the US dumb or ignorant for simply referring to ourselves by a name which is a part of the name of our country and not the full name of either American continent.
As you were taught America is one continent, we've (as well as many other nations) been taught that it is two. It doesn't make you right and us wrong and vice versa. Apparently, your country has found a solution to refer to the citizens of my country as to avoid confusion between that and what you think of as a singular continent, which is great. Cute for y'all. But, the condescending **** about us being dumb because of how we refer to our country and citizens as we were taught differently from you is really unnecessary.
