Also, Sandra Bullock is no more or less talented in Gravity than she has been for the past 20 years. She was just as good in Speed. Just because her past movies weren't directed by auteurs or get 97 on Metacritic doesn't mean she wasn't as good.

Still, a good, solid survival movie which stands out because it felt like the kind of story that would usually have a male lead (like Alien).

this is pretty much exactly what my film professor said after seeing it too, particularly the thing about it being a bit too sentimental.
