What's going on?

That's typical for follow ups to huge smashes. A lot of the time, it's because the follow-up is chosen poorly or handled poorly, or both.
In Robin's case, Give It 2 U has a horrible video & should not have followed up BL. The song is hot for a couple listens but loses its steam. The song was massacred by critics & took his sexual image a bit too far. VMA performance being linked to Miley & that mess was probably bad as well. I thought it would do well despite all this, but I can see why it isn't. Of the reasons I listed, the video is the biggest reason I think. It could've done better otherwise. He should release Pressure.
In Daft Punk's case, Lose Yourself to Dance is a boring choice, & just trying to recreate something. They should've released Doin' It Right & then followed it up with LYtD. Doin It Right is a fan favorite & probably wouldn't have smashed like GL, but would've made their supporters happy. It's one of the most popular album tracks.
I never like when too many collabs from the same artist are released consecutively, unless it's an entire collab album like JAY Z & Kanye. For another example, Suit & Tie & Holy Grail by JT & JAY Z have been hugely exposed smashes this year, but releasing Murder right now would be total overkill.
