On one hand, there are too many people who dislike Gaga and want her to get cut down to size for her to score highly...
But she's now becoming the underdog, and that could work in her favour.
I agree with this completely. It is hard to say. ARTPOP is the kind of record that would have been praised to the heavens if it were Gaga's debut album. Now it seems in fashion to knock her down a peg or ten.
But now that she isn't "winning" there is a chance that people will love her all over again
Because it's cool to hate on Gaga now. Judas killed her momentum. It was the last straw after the Alejandro video, meat dress and declaring BTW as the album of the decade with the lead single being a bit messy. Applause has done good, but the second single needs to be a Poker Face to make her acceptable again. It's like whenever you say you like Gaga in public people assume you're gay or you're a devil worshipper or worse, both. I don't want to sound negative, I love Gaga and I love Applause and I've loved almost everything she has done since the summer of '08 when I discovered her, but we need to realize, she isn't the it girl anymore.
ARTPOP has a lot to prove and I think people are going to be very critical.
Applause was pretty well received by the critics though wasn't it?
I think it was but I know people hated Aura so who knows.
I'm just saying I rather have a popstar that will make me think, sad, angry and sometimes I won't agree with her than everything being super sweet and perfect.

Hate was a too strong vote but it was very very mixed from what I've read. Oh well
I think mostly the intro/first verse is what most people were mixed about. The chorus is big , and indeed the version that is floating around now is a rough demo then we could expect work on it when we hear the studio version
If we're talking about fans, I guarantee you that half the people who hated Aura only hated it because it's not "radio friendly" or "GP friendly".
If we're talking about critics, it was the controversy over it being titled Burqa and the religion drama that happened after. It was basically Judas 2.0.

Critics weren't too fond of the actual music either though.
