I hope you don’t mind when I crawl into bed at a ridiculous hour, early in the morning, after a long night of writing and editing. I like late nights, but they don’t agree with me — my hair will probably be all over the place because I would have been running my hands through it, and my glasses will be incredibly smudged.
I’ll try not to wake you, though. I won’t turn on the lights as I try to get into bed, and if I stub my toe or hit my knee against the edge of the bed, I promise to suffer in silence, and not yell out an expletive, like I usually tend to do, since I know how hard it is for you to get back to sleep once you’ve woken up.
I will, however, move over to your side and gently kiss your forehead, brushing your hair away from your face. I’ll smile to myself when I see how peaceful you look in your sleep, and pull the covers up over your shoulders as I mumble a sleepy, “I love you.”. If I know that you’re fast asleep, I’ll snuggle up beside you, with one arm and one leg draped over you, because that’s really comfortable.
But only if I know that it isn’t going to wake you up. You need your sleep, I know that.
