I could see challenges where editing is optional and/or encouraged, but I don't see how it would work to require it.

Exactly what I was thinking. I think it's just a simple Best Avatar challenge.
But you guys can always use Photoshop to make yours.
I've got one of my old classics (in my opinion lol) to use for any avi challenges. I'm really proud of it because it was the first gif avi I ever made myself.
Anyway, I'm really excited for the first challenge! If it does include making avatars, I'm ready for use of my limited Photoshop and Illustrator skills
I hate Photoshop.
