Madrid artists want Gaga to wear their dress

Madrid - Raquel Moreno and Mónica Gutiérrez are rubbish artists, based in Madrid, Spain. They have designed a dress, made entirely from hundreds of pairs of headphones donated by Spain's Renfe railway company, and they want Lady Gaga to wear it.
The two ladies are members of the art collective "Basurama". What they do is to take discarded items from everyday life and create something brand-new and artistic.
In their first joint project, Moreno and Gutiérrez have created a unique dress, weighing 2.7 kilograms (6 pounds), using the disposable headphones passengers are given on Spain's national trains.
"The dress is part work of art and part musical instrument," Gutiérrez told the media.
"It contains 235 individually functioning sets of headphones, all of which can plugged into an MP3 player."
The two artists came up with the idea after Renfe, Spain's national railway company, donated almost a million discarded sets of headphones to an art workshop.
segoviaudaz.es (in Spanish) reports that the two ladies were shocked at the size and waste of the donation:
"When we saw the amount of headphones that Renfe gave us, we were shocked."
"They only have an average life span of 2 or 3 hours, which is the length of a single journey, and then they are thrown away."
So the two artists decided to make a plan:
"When we saw all those headphones and starting thinking about creating a dress, we knew who we wanted to wear it - Lady Gaga.
"She's such a fashion icon, and the connection between headphones and music and her just seemed obvious."
Moreno and Gutiérrez then did a little research on line:
Gutiérrez told El Mundo (Spanish language) "It will fit really good on Gaga because we researched her measurements,"
They then spent 37 hours putting together the dress, which consists of 535.8 metres (1,765 feet) of tangled headphone cable.
Gutiérrez says that the final product (pictured below) is "a statement about consumerism and our disposal culture."
The two artists have now launched a campaign, which they say is "certain" to get Lady Gaga to wear the figure-hugging artwork, including a Twitter account and a video on Vimeo (above).
"It'll be our gift," said Gutiérrez. "We don't want any money for this."
One little curiosity about the dress is that the large number of headphones enables the dress to make sounds like a "maraca" (or rattle), as the owner walks along. "Olé!"
And looking at other videos in their Vimeo account, it seems that Lady Gaga can get matching accessories for a pet dog too.
It is rather amusing to read the comments about the dress on the gagadaily fan website, with several members calling the dress "tacky". When comparing an artistic creation to another Lady Gaga outfit - a dress made from raw meat - one wonders where their heads are.
