The NFL is owned by the team owners. Yes, the owners are millionaires, but owning a team is only a hobby for them. They have a set money figure for the team, which is a salary cap that directly affects which players they pay and how their teams perform. The last thing they want is some musician taking away the money they have for the team. They have every right to demand their money back.

But I'm not seeing what you're seeing about nbc fining the nfl. Where does it say or imply that? The FCC hasn't fined anyone, so why would NBC fine the NFL? I don't think this is even about any fines the NFL had to pay. From what I gather, she either signed something or agreed to some behavioral/morals clause/statute before she performed. The middle finger violated that and now they want her to pay some kind of punitive damages.
