your point? Record sales have nothing to do with it. There are dozens of artists who have sold just as much, some even more, than mariah, and still are not eligible for being iconic.
whitney is admired more as a vocalist, and her material is more recognizable.

more iconic career, not person, not status.

It isn't. Just because it's more convenient for recurrent airplay doesn't make it more known.
The majority of her #1 songs were flops outside of the US. Whitney maintained her global edge for a while, whereas Mariah only had two global eras throughout her entire career. Whitney has more global songs than Mariah does.

33% (6 million) of Mariah's debut album came from outside the US.
50% (3.5 million) of Emotions is from outside the US, 1 million from Japan.
70% (25 million) of Music Box comes from outside the US
66% (10 million) of Merry Christmas comes from outside the US.
70% (18 Million) of Daydream comes from outside the US.
75% (3 million) of Charmbracelet comes from outside the US.
50% (6 million) of The Emancipation of Mimi comes from outside the US.
50% (1.5 Million) of E=MC² comes from outside the US.
75% (1.5 Million) of Memoirs comes from outside the US.
What is that you were sayin about local?
Her singles may be more urban and therefore don't do well on those fake WW charts ATRL uses, but she's still selling albums WW, more than Whitney did too.

I knew this thread would not end well... Some members are basically dedicated to downplay all of Mariah's impressive achievements.

Since 1994 "All I Want For Christmas" has performed better in U.S. and WW then "IWALY" excluding 2012 because her death.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_I_W...rt_performance
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Will_...2.80.931993.29
Also excluding 2012, it has done better Socially every year garnering more Airplay (AIWFCIY actually got more Airplay in 2012, I think. ), and has done better socially on sites such as Youtube every year excluding 2012.
AIWFCIY will also chart better and have a better social influence then IWALY in 2013, 2014, and the next 1,000 years after that.

I'd say Mariah had the better career while Whitney had the better "celebrity" (or fame, good or bad)

 Are these wiki estimates?
Based off of certifications:
Studio albums:
MC (9.9M US, 2M outside)
Emotions: (4M US, 3M outside)
Music Box (10M US, 16M outside)
Daydream (10M US, 10M outside)
Butterfly: (5M US, 3M outside)
Rainbow: (3M US, 3M outside)
Charmbracelet: (1M US, 1M outside)
TEOM: (6M US, 3M outside)
E=MC2: (1M US, 1M outside)
MOAIA: (500k US, 1M outside)
..
other albums:
MTV Unplugged: (3M US, 1M outside)
Merry Christmas (5M US, 4M outside)
#1's: (5M US, 8M outside)
Greatest Hits: (1M US, 2M outside)
The Remixes: (..300k US)
US: 64.7/65M
Overseas: 58M
Average:
US: 65M/16 albums = 4M
Overseas: 58M/16 albums = 3.6M
.. note if I was to take the Japan sales out of the majority of these albums, most would not exceed 2M.

You ALWAYS say Mariah was only global for two era but yet her only albums to sell more in the USA were here debut and second album
Every single album released after her first two sold more outside the USA then it did in the USA

5 of those 10 albums you listed in the first list met or exceeded the sales WW, so your point is? And 2 that didn't exceed were critic flops, and 1 was her debut. So your point?
And the other albums 3/5 did bettter WW, making 8 of her 15 albums not local! And since most of her albums aren't local, that would mean she for the most part - isn't local. You proving your own argument wrong.

The best vocalist the world has ever seen, Mariah.
I Will Always Love You was THE hit but overall Mariah's career has been way more consistent and iconic.

How can a global artist go from diamond (in other countries) to mutli-platinum, to gold and silver sales?
In Mariah's case:
For example, in major markets:
France: 1.4M (diamond) > 700k (2x plat)> 200k (2x gold)
UK: 1.6M (5x plat)> 600k (2x plat) > 60k (silver)
Australia: 840k (12x plat) > 350k (5x plat) > 140k (2x plat)
Talk to Mariah and her label to update her certifications (even though some of them actually were updated this month) . I'm basing it off of something official.

Wikipedia doesn't use estimates, they use reliable sources unlike these fabricated reciepts you're bringing to the table.
A study done in 200 shows that my source is just as reliable as Encyclopedia Britannica. Try Again.

And not you ignoring the fact that Mariah has still SOLD MORE ALBUM than Whitney. How can you call a gorl that has sold more albums WW than the girl you're defeninding "local" and not view yourself as a joke?

Not really in Europe and definitely not in my country considering that Mariahs 'iconic' christmas song peaked at no. 72
For your info, IWALY is considered a christmas classic here.

Wikipedia always using reliable sources, but certifications are suddenly fabricated?
Am I missing something or?
