Not really, it's just that people mainly remember the talented ones. There were tons of "untalented" (compared to the artists who are seen as "talented") artists, but people don't really remember them.
If you're looking for voices like Mariah and Whitney you will find them. Nothing has really changed tbh. In those days Madonna was still more successful than the Whitneys and Mariahs. Britney was more successful than Christina and Beyonce. There's always something for everyone. I personally think Rihanna is the only popstar that has both talent and success. However she has bad performances and people will never forget that.
But just having a good voice isn't the definition of being talented. There is songwriting, producing your own music, playing many instruments, etc.
Yes. I mean, the fact that singing live or writing your own songs (regardless of how good you are at it) is considered to be a rare accomplishment these days says a lot.
What? There a lot more Pop artists that write their own songs right now than let's say 10 years ago.
What good is a talented vocalist if they don't have good material, though.
"Talent" stans annoy me sometimes.
Whitney had some of the cheesiest songs ever, but managed to pull people in with her beautiful voice. She could sing the alphabet and most people would love it simply because of her voice.
I love lyrics, but they'd destroy something like this:
The voice shouldn't be disregarded simply because of bad material. It can help that bad material if anything.
The gerenal public's knowledge of music is limeted by what they hear on radio in a short period (4 - 5 years)
Like, most of kids & teen I know nowaday already forget about Whitney, Mariah... and they think Adele is the best singer ever

Artists have been writing their own songs since forever. It was actually more prominent to see that represented in mainstream music prior to the teen pop craze of the late 90s and onwards, so it's definitely not a novelty. Just that we've seen so little of that within the past decade that people don't realize that most musicians do write their own songs if they look beyond the Top 40. It's not a rare talent at all.
I say, "No".
Standards aren't necessarily low, people just like what they like.
Clearly, Mariah is more talented than say Selena Gomez... but that doesn't mean that they have to prefer Mariah's voice.
