Lana is writing about her own feelings, she's not saying whoever listens to her music should share her opinion or want the same from a relationship. Besides, there are so many artists out there who release lyrics that could be called questionable or unfit for a younger audience yet they're still shown in the media every single day, why didn't she mention them?
And personally I think it's a bit sad that she feels the need to talk about other artists at this early point of her career. She should focus on herself and her own music, but of course it's much easier to get attention when you name-drop someone like Lana.
You're right, there are lots of artists out there who release questionable lyrics. I guess Lana just stood out to Lorde. Who says she isn't focusing on her own music? It was an answer in an interview, she has an opinion, is she not allowed to share it?

She could have well answered that question without mentioning Lana or anyone else. It was a question about herself and her music, not "What do you think about Lana's lyrics". Of course she is allowed to share her opinion, but I don't think that was the right place and time because the question was not aimed at that.
Ugh the things I want to say... I'll keep it cute and say that Lana's lyrics aren't for everyone and they have this hidden/raw emotion and many artists dream of.
All these "ooooooh she's so pretentious oooohhhhh she's so annoying" comments are exactly what people were saying about Lana when she was new on the scene and was developing a bandwagon.

As a musician she's drawing from her experiences listening to other music and sharing her feelings about it. She's still relatively new to the industry, she's not going to answer everything perfectly. New Zealand is a culturally barren place (I live here) - I'm not sure if Lorde knows the "rules".

When I wrote Royals, I was listening to a lot of rap, but also a lot of Lana Del Rey, because she’s obviously really hip-hop influenced, but all those references to expensive alcohol, beautiful clothes and beautiful cars – I was thinking, ‘This is so opulent, but it’s also ********.
That's how you know that people like Lorde are almost always treacherous hypocrites -- they always make an exception for themselves. They live by that old wishy-washy principle of "do as I tell you, not as I do".

So are you Lorde?
Sure, of course she is influenced by other music and I'd agree with you that she is still very young and new to this industry and might not really be aware of how it comes across when she says things like that.
So it's bad to have feelings now? Write about heartbreak?
And Jesus Christ, Lana Del Rey is not here to make music for teenage girls anyway, just ppl who enjoy it. She needs to get a grip.
I hardly listen to the lyrics anyway, I just love her voice and the string arrangements with Hip-Hop flavor. And hold up: what the **** is a Lorde anyway? Another person for MarcMonster to go see and fall asleep to and brag about meeting her on the Internet? (if he does that to Lana or Azealia tho..........)
too bad 90% of Lana fans are white teenage girls with a tumblr account
People need to sit down, she's a Lana's fan. Don't tell me that bridge of Royals wasn't influenced by her. Lorde is much better anyway and she's like 10 years younger

Maybe she likes its sound rather than its lyrical content. She acknowledged Lana as an 'influence' because she herself listens to hip hop, so apparently she praises her sound but not the message she conveys.
