Spotify is so pointless. Like, you don't even own the music.

why do I need to own it? If I can hear it whenever I want - I mean that's the point of owning it to begin with - and it doesn't take up any space on my phone or computer, NO COMPLAINTS WHATSOEVER - unlimited music, ALL THE TIME - ANY TIME - ANY WHERE without any constraints.

I already pay for unlimited internet on my phone, I have internet at home - it's not like I'm going above and beyond. I don't have to worry about storage fees or expanding my hard-drive to fit more, worrying about it be lost... Idk

These days it's much easier to listen to an album before you buy it. Back in the day you got to know an album through its singles. That's why album sales followed single success much more than now.

General awareness of an album also changed from gradual (through singles, infrequent promo) to immediate (internet is much faster than traditional media, promo focuses on release week).

LOL@the piracy excuse. Piracy has been around forever. It's not anything new.

The real reason albums don't sell anymore is because this generation of pop stars are lazy, and simply not worth the $10. The public doesn't trust that their whole albums are worth the money, so instead they just buy the songs that they heard and halfway like, and leave the album sitting to collect dust.

Piracy HAS been around since forever, but its more prominent now because of the internet. Albums were like $20 at one point, they've gotten cheaper. People don't buy music, because they feel that its a waste. Why buy something, when you can get it free? Also, we live in different times. Its obvious now, that streaming is the future. We saw how Netflix took off, people want all you can eat service. Which is why streaming is growing, while digital and physical are stagnating or slowing down.

Because before people bought the singles first. I remember when Rainbow came out, I had only Heartbreaker single, but I actually bought the album only when she released Crybaby.

Nowadays, an album's total sales can be pretty much predicted with its first week sales. Albums that debut with 100K generally sell 300K - 500K. Albums that debut with 300K generally sell 900K - 1.2M. Even an album that debuts with almost 1 million (The 20/20 Experience) only sells 2.2 million total, whereas ten years ago it would've gone Diamond. Most albums only sell 2x or 3x of their debuting week.
