like it or not alternative/indie people are more likely to have continued moderate success in their own genre, compared to pop artists. Pop radio is fickle, unlike other genre radio.
BESIDES Lorde has been smashing in her home country all before this, and for god's sake she's just 16 and has a lot of time to prove herself again and again
that was true five years ago, unfortunately not today - alternative/indie IS the new pop. just look at the top 40, especially in australia/NZ. everyone who used to listen to pop has shifted at least a bit to the indie girls, except their fickle personalities haven't really changed all that much

different sides of the same coin, eh
you're talking about how people who listened to pop are listening to more alternative stuff so alternative is becoming more popular? That's totally not what I was trying to say. What I meant was that even when both of them lose relevancy in the mainstream world, Lorde at least has a genre that is not pop that can back her up. Whereas for Carly, it would be harder for her as pop is her main genre (unless she goes back to folk or something)
I refuse to admit that the good sis Carly is really over until she drops her second lead single from her third album and it fails to chart on the Hot 100. Only THEN will she be over.
I honestly think that most people underestimate her. But we'll see, only time will tell.
I do think that Lorde will have moderate success. Most likely not another hit as big as "Royals" has been for her, but I don't expect her to just drop off the face of the planet either. But really, I don't mind if she's that successful... she's an Indie artist, it's rare for her to even have a hit so big in the first place.

This literally applies to Carly Rae as well though. Carly was smashing in her home country before CMM.

lorde does not have an alternative following though -- basically everyone who listens to her is a quasi-hip-tumblr kid who has either grown up on tumblr and will grow out of it or has jumped on the bandwagon and used to be a pop fan.
does she really have a huge mainstream following in the same way lana del rey (the only successful "bandwagon" in the past few years) had in her beginnings? lana also had LOTS of material to fall back on-many great demos to keep people interested, an upcoming album, high-budget videos, great image, rich background CONTROVERSY etc.etc. all the ingredients, basically.
so what does lorde have to fall back on?
talent?
one big song?
one and a half?
an upcoming album?
kimbra had that. so did gotye. they were alternative.

Compared to Lorde, she's rather moderate. Besides back then she wasn't full blown pop yet. I'm just saying the genre their in does play a role in determining their future success, if they do fade away. Of course I'm not ruling out anything, anything could happen.

Of course there are lots of factors in play. But who do you think would be able to build the more hardy fanbase?

Gotye hasn't released anything since Somebody That I Used To Know smashed. It smashed AFTER his album era was over and done with.
And Kimbra has never had success in North America, other than her 2 Grammys.

Don't you get it Lorde is different, she is seen as a some kind of saviour, She has just arrived in Europe and they will treat her like a Legend.
Here, first time on french TV
They just know it, that she is different, it happens sometimes.
The thing with Carly is that the song was bigger than her so she wasn't able to make her name to be noticed while the Lorde won't have that problem considering the song hasn't overtaken her and she seems to be the artist with moderate hits in the Adult charts.
