I'm hoping Dark Horse doesn't go the same route as Wrecking Ball and end up being popular enough for her to make it the official second single.
I adore Katy but Britney is my main priority.
I don't see how it could happen. "Roar" is way too big at the moment for Katy to smash like that. I know Katy's been showing unprecedented power, but for her promo single to even hit #5 on iTunes is beyond amazing.
I was under the impression that Dark Horse is a pre-order only track. So you'd need to pre-order the album to get it. IF that is the case, then it won't be a threat to Britney.

I thought that's what Wrecking Ball was at first as well though?

taylor did it effortlessly many times..not saying katy is on taylor's level but you never know
That's not luck, though. She's giving her song enough time to get extra spins on radio that it doesn't debut too early on the Hot 100 (like WANEGBT or Roar did thanks to super early radio releases), but holding back the release so it debuts high when it's officially released. Artists used to do it around a week or more in 2008 (she even did that with "Womanizer)," but illegal downloading is so much easier now that waiting that long can end up losing out on longevity. She's promoting, holding back the release AND getting a radio deal, but not too early that it debuts early and also late enough that even if she doesn't gain too many spins the following Monday, she doesn't get a huge rolling effect thanks to her first day being a partial day. This is actually really well done. I was so sure they'd want till like a couple of hours after her performance like they did with Miley's and **** it up.
and that's why you're one of the best new stans here

Remember the gifting rules. I believe the limit is 5 copies in order for it to count. Anything over 5 doesn't count.
10 would be fine

Yeah, Dark Horse def won't become the official 2nd single. Doesn't sound like a #1 to me and Katy is gonna want to have a streak of #1s when it comes to official singles. She released several promo singles before Teenage Dream came out and is just doing that again.
Since Britney will be sending the song to radio and having a music video (streaming points), it'll chart higher on the Hot 100 even if Katy does have higher sales initially.

Miley's was definitely just released as a commercially available promo single. I'm pretty sure all promo singles are done that way and Katy's will be, too. I don't see how iTunes could make the song pre-order only after the album's already been available for pre-order.

I asked umi about Dark Horse because he's pretty reliable when it comes to info about Katy and this is what he said:

It's kinda like what's currently happening for Bangerz right now. You can preorder the album and receive WCS and WB (you have to pay for the tracks), OR you can just buy the tracks without preordering the album. Those who choose to preorder the album won't have the sales reflected on the iTunes singles charts; it'll count toward the album charts. Conversely, those who just choose to buy the single will have their sales reflected on the iTunes singles chart.
This makes sense. Considering a lot of people have already preordered Prism they might choose to just buy Dark Horse on it's own. I'm hoping it won't be much of a threat to Britney but Katy herself is a dark horse (as the Gaga stans found out) so you never know .
