Radio plays what users like to listen to and don't change the channel for. That's why songs like Blurred Lines and Get Lucky can get spun thousands of times a day over and over. Because it keeps listeners listening. Even a slight drop in listeners can mean thousands of lost advertising dollars.

Hence why it makes sense for them to blast new singles by top artists in the first week. It's really risk free + if they see the public response is bad, they will know to not play it so often the following weeks.
