Why do people buy singles from iTunes?
Seriously, WHY?
I find it really pointless. Notice that I'm talking about "singles" here. I understand the value of a physical album where you consider it as a piece of art, and buying an album is some sort of appreciation for the Artist's effort. But I'm talking here about the Digital Single. What's the point of purchasing it when you can get it off Limewire, for free? It doesn't take 1 minute to download a song in its high quality from there. And if you really like it, buy the album. Singles were meant to promote the Albums, so if the labels are promoting their product, why do you have to PAY for their promotion when it's not even the main product? If they want to measure the popularity of their singles, why don't they just release them on iTunes --for FREE and let people download ?!
Discuss.

I've always wondered why people downloaded of iTunes.
But say the truth the ONLY time I buy a song off of iTunes is if I really wanna help the artists sales but thats about it.
Theres really no point in paying 99 cents for every song you wanna put on your damn ipod

Because some people believe that downloading songs from limewire or any other peer to peer software is illegal. 99 cents won't hurt that much. Me, if I live in the U.S. (there's no itunes philippines here) I will definitely buy singles in itunes and I will not download illegally.

They do it to promote the artist more
Like for example. People, 2-3 weeks before the album is out, buy the single. It reaches the top 10 easliy (even though the CD ain't out yet). Then it slowly falls a bit. Eventually the album comes out and they all buy the album. Now there are two of the same songs in the top 100.
Easy promotion right there I could be wrong though

So If you have a wishlist of 100 songs, you're going to pay 100$ for them?

I guess I know why singles are being released, Kevin. The question is WHY do you have to BUY them since they are being released as promotion.

Because some albums take too long to come out so we need to buy the singles because we can't wait. And using Limewire is illegal and people get fined for using it. I'd rather buy 100 songs worth $100 from iTunes than download 100 songs off of Limewire and be fined thousands of dollars.

Yeah, music industry is a business. Creating a song is so costly from hiring top writers, singers, producers, instrumentalist etc. etc. and not to mention the time, brain cells (lol I mean unique ideas) and effort they are giving. So If we make singles free to download it is so not fair to the people who worked for it. Its business the song they release are their products and we are the consumers.

For all you illegal downloaders, put your shoes in your favorite artists shoes.
If you put a lot of effort into your work, and release your work to the public. How would you like it if everyone downloaded your work instead of buying it? Hmmm....think about it.

BUT when you buy the album, you're already rewarding ALL the singers, writers, producers etc., not to mention that these people are not in need of your money since they must've ALREADY got paid when they contributed to the album. The label's goal is the album, and you're supposed to pay for that. They release the single(promotion) to promote the album (product). So it's your right to get the single and decide if you want to buy the album or not. You don't have to pay to get promoted for a product.

interesting issue
I'd say lots of people are afaraid of downloading illegally and that's why they choose iTunes - which is not expensive afterall.
Take for example: you get 10$ of pocketmoney each week - you buy food from it, and you can buy your fave track each week. and iTunes is a good way to persuade folks not to d/l illegally.

Yeah, I don't get it. It's so easy to download music off Limewire. I guess people feel guilty if they download music "ilegally".

Good thread. I guess some people want to support an artist they like in every single way (a few people still buy the PHYSICAL single ), but yeah, I agree it's pointless.
eMule FTW.
