It depends on which ones you take. Some classes like AP Chemistry, AP United States History, AP Calculus can be useful for college credit. Others like AP Human Geography are very useless and many schools don't give you credit for those.
The tests range in difficulty, once again it depends on which one you take. The actual course work depends on the teacher. My AP United States History teacher didn't give us too much work, but this other AP US History teacher my friend had gave out a LOT of work and we both ended up getting a 4 (could have gotten a 5 if I spent more than an hour studying for the exam).
