I think Avril pulled it off well in WTH when it was just advertising her own clothing line/fragrance and they didn't look out of place. But the intro to Rock n Roll was the worst.
HIAM and WRWWR was awkward with the dating site. (What Dj goes on it during a rave?), Telephone was a bit weird with the police officer but not as bad.

The product placement in Telephone is iconic

I generally like it. It allows for way more imaginative music videos because those ads are very expensive so they have more money to work with. For that brief annoyance, you get a better video. Of course, I like it better when the ad is relevant to me.

I liked the product placement in Roar. It was done in a cute way. I don't like it when they just hold the phone or flip through their messages (Live It Up...). in this case, they were taking selfies with the monkey. Who WOULDN'T do that if there was a tame monkey on their shoulder and they had a proper camera? I take selfies with animals using my Lumia very very often. Her target market very likely abuses their smartphones and take selfies often. It was an effectively placed ad. You're sitting here discussing the Lumia 1020 and you vividly remember it's placement. You're probably well aware that your iPhone could not handle a 41mp motion shot like that.

Sunglasses ads very often look out of place in music videos, because it's always the ugly pair you wouldn't dare wear yourself... but it's over so quickly that I can't really complain.

Yes and no. If it's done correctly to coincide with the story of the video and isn't so obvious then it's fine. It's only the obvious product placement is where it begins to be tacky. Avrils product placement in Rock N' Roll was great.

Telephone is one of the WORST

Product placement ruins videos for me when they go out of their way to make it the focus of one particular shot/scene. That's just annoying and too much.

It depends on how it's executed, if it's blatantly obvious it can take away from the seriousness of the video, but if it's done in a way where the product can clearly be visibly seen but is shown in a way where it goes along with the flow of the video and isn't cutting away from it then it's alright and sort of makes the music video alittle more realistic since it's using real-world products in it, to me that is.

The NOKIA in Roar annoyed me
