I don't know, it seems like spin to make people digest the concept easier. Most Pokémon are good competitively to a degree. It's the other variables like TMs, natures and EV stats that give them chances to be better.

They could have tackled that problem amongst the starters without tacking on a mega evolution. Stats of Pokémon being revised isn't unheard of.
