As a fan on Windows 8, with a 2k tablet I bought for it, I can tell you a lot of websites used this simple look and a lot of web based OS's between 2009 and 2010.

You're also forgetting that these "simple looks" of websites and OS's at the moments stem form modern art and what people nowadays see Beautiful as.

Sadly though, most of the apps are changing their looks due to iOS 7 rather than Windows 8.
There isn't even a YouTube app for Windows 8.

I'm positive that it's not because of iOS 7. Google has been on this look for years now. Look at the Google Chrome icon. It went from 3d to the current flat one years ago.
