I often say this but with polyamorous relationships in mind where everyone is equally attracted to each other and an equal part in the relationship.
A polygamous marriage where it's one man, and multiple straight wives I can not see as something that should be legal. The science and studies just prove it's not healthy, the type of mental/emotional problems it causes, and one has to keep in mind the type of women who would allow it.*
Theoretically speaking, I don't see someone who is being abused* leaving/stopping someone else from being added if it became legal.
I'm extremely liberal (I defend polyamorous relations, outside of just posting online about them) but there is no way to tell the difference between the two dynamics I mentioned, and the risk would out weigh extending benefits to those relationships that are equal all around.
*This isn't saying all of them would be in abusive relationships, but even just having very low self esteem or not being assertive, or even wanting to keep your family together. Think about it, adding another woman, or losing the man you love/father to your children.
