I dont think it was the break, by the end of Cannibal she was already starting to not have as much star power, plus Die Young was a hit. It was the Warrior era that stopped her momentum
Mariah should've released E=MC2 in 2007 and promoted it correctly, and didn't take so long with this new era.
The E=MC2 era started off great though with amazing promo and her 18th number single as the first release. The era became messy though when she married Nick and lost interest.
I think the break Ke$ha took kill her career. I think she is one of the artist in the music industry that should release an album every year like Rihanna. I believe if Ke$ha released "Warrior" after the EP Cannibal then she wouldn't flop so hard like she is now.
Leona's three year break definitely killed her career.
Three year might not seem too long, but so many new artists got big from 2009 to 2012. Leona should've released an album in that period of time too as she was super famous back then.

But sis. Die Young smashed!
If that incident didn't happen and C'mon wasn't rush released then everything would have been great for her.
No music career was ever killed by a break. Sade can go 10 years without releasing anything, quietly come back and "slay" hard and effortlessly. Most of these artists that flopped came back from said break with either a weak album, a weak team, or both. If you've got a real X-factor that attracts a real (and devoted) following, a break won't hurt.
