Australia/New Zealand has been really great with picking up new songs by artists like that recently. The same thing happened with several songs by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Robin Thicke, Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Rihanna and others I'm probably forgetting... their songs were smashing here before the US picked them up, where they went on to become even bigger successes over there.
It's great that American Girl has at least reached the Hot 100. I've been hearing it a lot on Australian radio lately, hopefully it'll start to smash here, and then America will give it another chance. I think that the main thing that's probably hurting the song is that some Americans are getting offended by her image in the music video and reading too much into the song, thinking that she's saying that ALL American Girls behave like that... which isn't the case, whereas Australia won't have that kind of reaction because it's not about Australian Girls (even if it was, we'd probably just take it with a grain of salt and laugh about it).
This song is so good, i don't even knew who she was before seeing the video on twitter, i knew all the words one day after, but sadly she's in Epic Records and they don't even promote Avril.
wonder if they will promote Bonnie more. It definitely has chance to smash. 5x platinum imo
She should release "Sleepwalker" as a promo single now, the music video is also longtime ready.
I'm all for her releasing "Sleepwalker" as a promo single, but I think she needs to let "American Girl" grow a little bit more first. Like, let it at least get into the 60s/70s on Billboard...
Otherwise I could see it messing with AGs chart run.
